Looking to purchase your first home while still being close enough to enjoy the buzz of city living? It’s possible.
From the inner-city villages on the fringe of Sydney CBD to the western suburbs surrounding Parramatta, neighbourhoods undergoing urban renewal are offering a foot into the property market for those who want to be near a vibrant lifestyle.
“To get into the property market, you have to save a healthy deposit, have a stable job and have a really smart mortgage broker, and by that, I mean don’t just go with the interest rate. Make sure you’ve got someone with the right skill level to help you get the best loan for your situation,” says Rich Harvey, chief executive and founder of propertybuyer.com.au.
Harvey explains that first-home buyers tend to shy away from getting a mortgage because they think they won’t be able to travel or eat out, or it will kill their lifestyle. But armed with the proper research, getting into the market while still maintaining the lifestyle you enjoy is possible.
“Don’t go property shopping until you know your budget,” he says. “Once you know your budget think about a strategy – what property will fit your budget, what’s going to suit your lifestyle, is it close to family and friends, what will be your journey to work or, if you work from home, do you have a home office space, all those kinds of things.”
Jason Gao, regional director of Australia for SHOKAI Ausbao, echoes Harvey’s sentiments that doing the right research in an ever-changing property market will set you up for greater success.
“You have to spend time looking; don’t take shortcuts,” he says. “Inspect five to 10 products, so you can compare and know what you want. Ask yourself, is it value for money? Compare the infrastructure in and around developments you’re interested in.”
Being clear on what it is you’re looking for and then investing time in understanding the property market is paramount.
